Leaving on a jet plane

We start our trip today, and we'll be gone for a week. I have LOADS of things to do, so I won't write much today. I have this single-parent thing down (somewhat), and though it's a bit frustrating to have to do it all, Evan's smiles and giggles make it all worth it.

That's all the time I have. See you in a week!

Shots day

Yesterday went pretty well. Evan did great! (I'll post a pic of him next week, as Josh has the cable for the camera with him)

He's 12 lbs 3 oz, and 24.5 in long. He held his breath until he turned blue when he got the shots, but I fed him immediately after, and that helped, he went right back to sleep. Once we were back home, he wanted me and would scream if I so much as laid him on the boppy pillow. I checked his temperature a couple of times, but it never went above 98.6. He screamed in pain a few times, but for the most part he was smiling at me. I gave him Tylenol, and he fell asleep in my arms. We spent the afternoon like that, and at 9 pm we went to bed. He has been fine since.

Now I'm excited. I'm more than half way done with this single-parent-week, and it makes it all better. Tomorrow we start our trip, we're heading to Phoenix and we're spending the night there, since we have an early flight on Friday morning. And Friday we see Josh again. That's going to be great!

I'm doing laundry and taking care of the things I need to do before we leave, and thinking of what I need to pack. I can't wait to see Josh again!

Craziness ahead

I'm starting to get nervous about the weeks to come. I'm having trouble falling asleep, I have a hundred thoughts going through my head. It took me over an hour to fall back to sleep last night after our nightly feeding, and it took me almost 45 minutes to fall sleep for our morning nap, which only lasted 30 minutes. Evan wasn't awake yet, I just woke up on my own. Now I'm tired, but every time I lay down, I can't quiet my mind.

So here's what will happen in the weeks to come:

Tomorrow: Movers come here to estimate times.
Sunday: Josh leaves for work training.
Tuesday: Evan gets his first shots. I'll be all alone with him.
Friday: Evan and I fly to meet Josh. It'll be a long day...
Saturday: Visit Grandma Duffy.
Sunday: Visit Dennis and Ellen.
Monday: Visit Dave and Caroline.
Tuesday: Head back to Baltimore.
Wednesday: Fly back home.

Following Tuesday: Fly to WA --- Try to find a place to rent -- fly back on Saturday.

Two weeks after that: move to WA!

Evan is doing great, we have a good routine going. Very flexible on hours, but pretty consistent. He goes to sleep around 8-9 pm, wakes up between 1-3 am, he nurses and stays awake a total of 1.5 hours before going back to sleep for a good 3 hours. He's awake for about 2 hours and then he takes a morning nap, that can last up to 3 hours. And he's now taking an afternoon nap, a good 2-3 hours long. Of course, the craziness ahead almost guaranties that it'll hit the fan, so I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

So there's a lot on my mind, a lot of things to do and think about.I can't wait to be all moved in.

6 weeks old baby

Remember our little guy? The day we came home from the hospital, Evan was weighting under 8 lbs, 21 inches long. We set him down in his crib and took this picture of him:

How cute does he look? Small and thin, in his little monkey outfit, which was a little roomy at the time. Oh, our sweet little baby...

Today he's 6 weeks old, and he's been busy putting on some weight and growing. At an average of half a pound and half an inch per week, here he is:

Today he weights 11 lbs 3 oz, and he's 24 inches long. Look at those full cheeks! How adorable is he? And that little monkey outfit looks so small now!

6 weeks postpartum

Today was my 6 week postpartum appointment. The incision is healing great, things with me are looking good. The best part? Well, let me show you:

That's one week after delivery vs. 6 weeks. Remember I gained 41 lbs with pregnancy? Well, so far I've said good bye to 37 lbs! Woot! Even Dr. J was impressed, he said most women only lose 20 lbs by their 6 week appointment.

And even more:

That's me 4 weeks pregnant (before I showed at all) and me now, in my pre-pregnancy jeans! I tried on my jeans 2 weeks ago and they fit then, but now I can actually wear them because my incision doesn't hurt anymore. I'm sitting here typing while wearing my jeans!

Can you tell I'm feeling fabulous??

Growth spurt

I hear some babies eat all day long, every hour or two hours, during growth spurts. Boy, am I lucky!

Let me start by saying we love our car seat (Chicco Key Fit 30). You can adjust the straps very easily by pulling a single strap in the middle, and it comes with a very helpful newborn insert. This insert is just some extra padding for when they're tiny, to support their bodies and head.

Last week we went to get some groceries, and as we set Evan in his car seat we realized something: he's growing so fast, the head support insert was around his shoulders. He had been in his car seat 5 days before, and he didn't look like that! We had to move the insert to the next position up, and it still hits his shoulders (but also his head). He won't need it pretty soon.

And then it hit me. Evan spends most of the day awake on regular days, but that was not the case in the previous 2 days. He had been sleeping like a champ. He nursed as always, then took a long nap. He woke up from said 3-4 hour nap, nursed again, stayed awake for half hour or so, then took another long nap! Never has he slept so much since we came home. I think our kid is different: instead of eating around the clock, he grows in his sleep. Kids do grow in their sleep, though I never heard of this for babies. But that was the only big difference in his patterns, and it makes sense to me.

This is a tricky comparison, but let's try anyways. As you can see, his head is pretty much on the same area of that insert we were talking about (the light gray padded area around his head). But pay attention to the distance between the top of that insert and the top of the car seat (does that make sense?)

He's growing so fast!!
